Oxycodone Hydrochloride falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the simple version: both kava and oxycodone calm down your central nervous system, so taking them together can pile one sedative effect on top of another. This isn't about kava changing how your body breaks down oxycodone. It's that two relaxing substances add up.

With a strong opioid like oxycodone, that added sedation can mean heavier drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, and slower reflexes. The bigger worry is breathing that becomes too slow or too shallow, which is the most dangerous side effect of opioids. Expert anxiety guidelines specifically advise against mixing kava with other nervous system depressants. There's also kava's known risk of liver harm to keep in mind. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.

It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP1A2; research is conflicting.
In vitro research shows that kava extract significantly inhibits CYP2D6. However, clinical research shows that kava does not affect the metabolism of CYP2D6 substrates in humans.

Here's the good news on this pairing. Lab studies in test tubes suggested kava might block CYP2D6, an enzyme that helps process oxycodone. But actual studies in people showed kava does not meaningfully change how the body handles CYP2D6 medications. So a real-world interaction here is considered minor and unlikely.

That said, oxycodone is a strong opioid that already causes drowsiness, slowed breathing, and dizziness. Kava is also a relaxant that can make you sleepy. Stacking two calming substances can leave you groggier or more sedated than expected. Kava has also been linked to rare liver injury. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your medicine on your own.
