Oxcarbazepine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kava interacts with.

Combining kava with CNS depressants can have additive sedative effects.
Kava has CNS depressant effects. Concomitant use of kava with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Clinical practice guidelines from a joint taskforce of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recommend that CNS depressants, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not be used with kava.

Here's the thing to know about pairing kava with oxcarbazepine (Trileptal or Oxtellar XR): both of them have calming, slow-down effects on your brain. Oxcarbazepine already tends to cause drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and unsteadiness on its own. Kava works on similar brain pathways, so stacking the two can pile those effects on top of each other.

What that means in real life is you could feel more sleepy than usual, foggy-headed, or wobbly on your feet, which raises your risk of stumbles or falls. This isn't about kava changing your seizure medicine's blood levels, it's simply two sedating things adding together. There's also a separate concern that both kava and oxcarbazepine can affect the liver. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. However, kava has been linked to rare but serious liver damage, so it should be used with caution, avoided by people with liver problems, and only used after talking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
