Here's the simple version: GHB is a strong brain depressant, and oxcarbazepine (Trileptal, Oxtellar XR) also has a calming, sedating effect on the nervous system. When you stack two things that slow the brain down, those effects can pile up. Together they could make you unusually drowsy, dizzy, confused, or unsteady on your feet, and in a worst case they could slow your breathing dangerously.

Honestly, my bigger concern is GHB itself. It isn't a safe supplement, it's a controlled substance that can cause coma and breathing failure on its own. This warning is based on real-world reports rather than formal studies, but the risk is taken seriously. Please don't combine these without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Theoretically, GHB may reduce the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
GHB has been reported to cause seizures, and may theoretically reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsants. Also, concomitant use of GHB with sedative anticonvulsants may increase the risk of serious CNS and respiratory depression.

Here's the short version: GHB and oxcarbazepine (Trileptal, Oxtellar XR) are a worrying mix, and not something you want to combine on your own. Oxcarbazepine works by quieting down overactive electrical signals in the brain to prevent seizures. GHB, on the other hand, has actually been reported to trigger seizures, so in theory it could work against what your medication is trying to do and make breakthrough seizures more likely.

There's a second concern too. Both substances calm the central nervous system, so taking them together can deepen sedation and, in a worst case, slow your breathing dangerously. To be clear, this is based on limited, anecdotal reports, not strong studies, but the stakes are high. Please don't change anything without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist.

What is Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb)?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a powerful central nervous system depressant that is NOT a safe dietary supplement. In the U.S. it is a controlled substance, and only a tightly regulated prescription form (sodium oxybate) is legal for narcolepsy. Non-prescription GHB can cause coma, breathing failure, and death, and it is also a known 'date-rape' drug — it should not be taken outside of medical supervision.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
