Here's the simple version: both GHB and gabapentin calm down your central nervous system. Stacking two brain-slowing substances together means their sedating effects can pile up. With gabapentin alone you might already feel drowsy, dizzy, or foggy. Add GHB, which is a very strong depressant, and you could end up with dangerous breathing slowdown, extreme sedation, or even coma.

This isn't about one drug speeding up or blocking the other, it's about their effects adding together. The evidence here is mostly anecdotal, but the risk is serious enough that I'd treat it as real. Honestly, non-prescription GHB isn't safe to take at all. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before combining anything sedating with your gabapentin.

Gabapentin also falls under ANTICONVULSANTS.

Theoretically, GHB may reduce the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
GHB has been reported to cause seizures, and may theoretically reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsants. Also, concomitant use of GHB with sedative anticonvulsants may increase the risk of serious CNS and respiratory depression.

First, a serious heads-up: GHB is not a true supplement. Outside of the tightly controlled prescription form (sodium oxybate), it's an illegal and genuinely dangerous drug that can cause coma and stop your breathing. So this isn't a routine pairing question.

There are really two concerns here. GHB has been reported to trigger seizures, which could work against gabapentin and make it harder to keep your seizures controlled. On top of that, both gabapentin and GHB calm the nervous system, so taking them together can stack up the sedation, meaning heavy drowsiness, confusion, and dangerously slowed breathing. The evidence is mostly theoretical and anecdotal, but the safety risk is real. Please don't combine these, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about anything you're taking.

What is Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb)?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a powerful central nervous system depressant that is NOT a safe dietary supplement. In the U.S. it is a controlled substance, and only a tightly regulated prescription form (sodium oxybate) is legal for narcolepsy. Non-prescription GHB can cause coma, breathing failure, and death, and it is also a known 'date-rape' drug — it should not be taken outside of medical supervision.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
