Here's the thing to know about mixing beer with gabapentin: both of them calm down your central nervous system. When you add alcohol on top of gabapentin, those effects stack up. You may feel much sleepier, dizzier, or foggier than you'd expect from either one alone, and your coordination and balance can take a hit. That raises the real risk of falls, and in larger amounts it can even slow your breathing.

Gabapentin isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about beer changing how it's activated. It's simply two sedating things working together, and that combo is rated as a major, likely concern. Please don't change your dose on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether any alcohol is okay for you.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
