Theoretically, concomitant use may increase the risk of adverse effects from alcohol.
In patients taking bupropion, there have been rare reports of adverse psychiatric events or reduced alcohol tolerance. Additionally, in chronic alcohol users, abrupt discontinuation of alcohol while taking bupropion may increase the risk of seizure.

If you're taking bupropion (Wellbutrin or Zyban), it's smart to be cautious with beer. This combo doesn't speed up or slow down how your body clears the drug, so the worry isn't a blood-level change. Instead, mixing the two can occasionally lead to unusual reactions, like worse mood swings, agitation, or sleep problems, and some people find their tolerance to alcohol drops, meaning beer hits them harder than expected.

The bigger concern is seizures. Bupropion already lowers the seizure threshold a little, and if you drink regularly and then suddenly stop, that withdrawal can raise seizure risk further. This is based mostly on rare case reports, not strong studies, so don't panic. Still, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor about how much alcohol, if any, is safe for you.

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Bupropion Used For?

Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL

Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.

Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.
