Bupropion falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with astaxanthin and bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2B6 to process bupropion. In lab dish studies, astaxanthin seemed to speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear bupropion out faster and leave a little less of it working in your system.

If that happened, you might notice your depression, seasonal mood symptoms, or quit-smoking support not working quite as well. But I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is: it comes only from cells in a lab, not from real people, so we genuinely don't know if it matters in everyday life. I wouldn't panic over it. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding astaxanthin so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

Astaxanthin is a reddish carotenoid pigment with strong antioxidant activity in the lab, and it is widely promoted for skin, eye, heart, and exercise benefits. Early human studies are promising for a few uses, but the overall evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. What Is Bupropion Used For?

Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL

Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.

Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.
