Astaxanthin + Budesonide
Budesonide brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia.
Astaxanthin has a moderate interaction with Budesonide. Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Budesonide
Budesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down budesonide. In fact, the gut and liver clear most of an oral dose before it spreads through the body, which is part of why it causes fewer steroid side effects than other corticosteroids. The concern here is that lab studies (done in human liver cells, not in people) suggest astaxanthin may speed up CYP3A4. If that happened in real life, your system could clear budesonide faster, which might make it work less well at calming the inflammation in your Crohn's disease or IgA nephropathy.
Honestly, this is theoretical right now and hasn't been seen in humans, so I wouldn't panic. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your doctor or pharmacist before you start astaxanthin, especially if your symptoms are well controlled.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Budesonide page
“Budesonide (Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris) is a steroid designed to act locally in the gut or airways while the liver enzyme CYP3A4 clears most of what reaches the bloodstream. That design is exactly why this page warrants real care.”

About Astaxanthin
What is Astaxanthin?
- Antioxidant support
- Skin health and aging
- Eye health
- Exercise recovery
- Heart and inflammation support
Astaxanthin is a reddish carotenoid pigment with strong antioxidant activity in the lab, and it is widely promoted for skin, eye, heart, and exercise benefits. Early human studies are promising for a few uses, but the overall evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. It appears generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Budesonide
What Is Budesonide Used For?
Brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia
Budesonide calms inflammation. Which condition it treats depends on the product and how it is delivered.
- Asthma: inhaled budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler for ages 6 and older; nebulized suspensions such as Pulmicort Respules for children 12 months to 8 years) is used for long-term control.
- Crohn’s disease: budesonide delayed-release capsules treat mild to moderate active disease of the ileum and/or ascending colon (ages 8 and older). They also help maintain remission for up to 3 months in adults.
- Ulcerative colitis: Uceris extended-release tablets and Uceris/budesonide rectal foam help bring on remission of mild to moderate disease.
- Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE): Eohilia oral suspension is used for 12 weeks in people 11 and older.
- IgA nephropathy (IgAN): Tarpeyo is used in adults at risk of progression, to reduce loss of kidney function.
The inhaled products are not for sudden asthma attacks.

Budesonide Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Budesonide as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Astaxanthin — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
