Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) and Amphetamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

AMPHETAMINES

Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under AMPHETAMINES — the group Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) interacts with.

Concomitant use of amphetamines and GHB can increase the risk of severe adverse effects.
Concomitant use of GHB with amphetamines has been associated with severe adverse effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of GHB with amphetamines may also antagonize the effects of GHB. Conversely, concomitant use of GHB with amphetamines is reported to mask the symptoms of amphetamine intoxication.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: GHB isn't a real dietary supplement. It's a powerful brain depressant and a controlled substance, and taking it on your own is genuinely dangerous. So pairing it with your amphetamine (like Dyanavel XR, Mydayis, or Adzenys) is something I'd steer you away from entirely.

Here's the tricky part. Amphetamine is a stimulant that revs you up (raising heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness), while GHB does the opposite and slows the brain down. When people mix them, the two can mask each other. The stimulant can hide how dangerously sedated you're getting from GHB, and you may not realize how much trouble you're in until breathing slows or you collapse. Reports also suggest amphetamines can blunt GHB's effect, tempting people to take more. This is based on anecdotal reports, not strong studies, but the danger is real. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before combining anything with your medication.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

About Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb)

What is Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb)?

  • Narcolepsy (cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness)
  • Sleep aid
  • Misused as a recreational 'party drug'
  • Bodybuilding/muscle building (unproven)
  • Alcohol withdrawal (in some countries)

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a powerful central nervous system depressant that is NOT a safe dietary supplement. In the U.S. it is a controlled substance, and only a tightly regulated prescription form (sodium oxybate) is legal for narcolepsy. Non-prescription GHB can cause coma, breathing failure, and death, and it is also a known 'date-rape' drug — it should not be taken outside of medical supervision.
