Here's the thing to know if you take oxcarbazepine (Trileptal or Oxtellar XR) and you're thinking about having a beer. Both alcohol and oxcarbazepine slow down activity in the brain, so putting them together tends to pile up the same effects. You may feel noticeably more drowsy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, and your thinking and coordination can get foggy. Beer can also lower your seizure threshold, which works against what your medication is trying to do.

This is rated a major, likely interaction, so it's worth taking seriously. I wouldn't tell you to change anything on your own. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether any alcohol is okay for you, especially when you're first starting or adjusting this medicine.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
