Why this applies to Trimipramine

Trimipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with kava and trimipramine. In lab dish studies, kava appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear trimipramine. If that pathway slows, more of the drug could linger in your system. Since trimipramine is an active medication (not a prodrug that needs switching on), higher levels could mean stronger effects, things like extra drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is only seen in test tubes so far, not in real people, so it's theoretical. I'd also gently flag that both kava and this kind of medicine can be sedating and hard on the liver. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
