Isoniazid falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Kava interacts with.

Theoretically, using kava with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
Kava has been linked with over 100 cases of hepatotoxicity. Most cases occur with excessive and prolonged use. There is some concern that kava can adversely affect the liver, especially when used in combination with hepatotoxic drugs.

Here's the concern with this pairing. Isoniazid is one of the better-known medications for being tough on the liver, and it already comes with warnings about liver injury during TB treatment. Kava has its own track record here too, with over 100 reported cases of liver damage, mostly from heavy or long-term use. Put the two together and you could be stacking two liver stressors on top of each other.

This is based on weaker, anecdotal evidence and is largely theoretical, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with isoniazid I'd be extra careful. Watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea, or pain on the right side of your belly, and please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Kava is a Pacific Island plant traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, and some studies suggest it may help mild anxiety. About Isoniazid

What Is Isoniazid Used For?

Brand names: Laniazid, INH, Nydrazid

Isoniazid is used to treat all forms of tuberculosis (TB) caused by susceptible bacteria. Because TB bacteria can quickly become resistant to a single drug, isoniazid must always be combined with other anti-TB medications when treating active TB — it is never used alone for active disease.

Isoniazid is also used as preventive therapy (sometimes called latent TB treatment) for people who have a positive TB skin test but do not yet have active disease. This includes people with HIV infection, close contacts of someone with active TB, recent TB skin test converters, and people with certain medical conditions — such as silicosis, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, leukemia, or Hodgkin's disease — that raise their TB risk.
