Why this applies to Deflazacort

Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

It is unclear if kava inhibits CYP3AA; research is conflicting.
Although in vitro research suggests that kava inhibits CYP3A4, more robust clinical evidence shows that kava has no effect on CYP3A4. In a clinical study in healthy volunteers, taking kava 1000 mg twice daily (containing a daily dose of 138 mg kavalactones) for 28 days had no effect on CYP3A4 activity.

Here's the short version on combining kava with deflazacort (Emflaza). Deflazacort needs to be activated and then processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Early lab-dish studies hinted that kava might slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let more active drug build up and nudge up steroid side effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or stomach upset.

But the better human research tells a calmer story. In a real study of healthy volunteers, kava taken daily for a month did not change CYP3A4 activity at all. So a meaningful interaction here looks unlikely. My bigger concern is actually the liver: both kava and the demands of treatment can stress it, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding kava.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
