Carisoprodol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Kava interacts with.

Theoretically, kava might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that kava significantly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not yet been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with combining kava and carisoprodol (Soma). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to break down carisoprodol. Lab studies suggest kava can block that enzyme, which in theory means carisoprodol could clear more slowly and build up a bit in your system. Carisoprodol is active on its own (not a prodrug), so higher levels would tend to mean stronger effects.

What might that look like in real life? More drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, and trouble concentrating, especially since both kava and carisoprodol are already calming to the nervous system. Keep in mind this is only seen in test-tube research, not in people yet. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two.

Carisoprodol tablets — sold under the brand name Soma, as well as generic versions — are used to relieve discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions in adults. Think short-term muscle pain and stiffness from things like lower back injuries.

This medication is intended only for short-term use — up to two or three weeks. It has not been proven effective for longer-term use, and the muscle conditions it treats are generally short-lived by nature.
