Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Soma (carisoprodol) and procaine. Both of these can press the brakes on your central nervous system. Carisoprodol already makes a lot of people drowsy, foggy, dizzy, and wobbly on their feet, and procaine, especially given in a vein (IV), can add its own depressant effect on the brain and heart. Stacked together, the worry is too much sedation, slowed breathing, low blood pressure, or fainting.

One thing to keep in mind: this is a theoretical caution based on how the two drugs behave, not on a pile of real-world cases. A numbing shot at the dentist is a different situation than IV procaine. Still, before any procedure using procaine, tell your dentist, doctor, or pharmacist that you take Soma so they can plan safely.

About Procaine

What is Procaine?

  • Local anesthesia (medical/dental use)
  • Marketed 'anti-aging' supplements
  • General well-being and vitality claims
  • Mood and energy support (unproven)

Procaine is a synthetic local anesthetic (best known by the brand name Novocaine) used by doctors and dentists to numb tissue. It is not a true dietary supplement or herb, and the 'anti-aging' products built around it (such as GH3 or 'Gerovital') have weak evidence and real safety concerns. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using any product containing procaine.

About Carisoprodol

What Is Carisoprodol Used For?

Brand names: Soma, Rela

Carisoprodol tablets — sold under the brand name Soma, as well as generic versions — are used to relieve discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions in adults. Think short-term muscle pain and stiffness from things like lower back injuries.

This medication is intended only for short-term use — up to two or three weeks. It has not been proven effective for longer-term use, and the muscle conditions it treats are generally short-lived by nature.
