Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Tangerine product and its label doesn't state a use — see Tangerine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold rates mandarin for cancer prevention as having insufficient reliable evidence. No other effectiveness claims are documented in the data available to us.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mandarin fruit itself is generally well tolerated when eaten as food. However, the safety data we hold notes a caution: concentrated extracts and essential oils are less studied and should be used only with medical advice.

Adverse effects from eating the fruit are rare, though contact dermatitis has been reported with tangerine essential oil applied to skin. There is no pregnancy and lactation safety data on file for this ingredient.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Tangerine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 644 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on midazolam (Versed) or any medications broken down by CYP3A4 in your liver — a category that includes sedatives, some blood pressure drugs, cholesterol medications, and immunosuppressants. The documented interactions are Minor in severity, but the sheer number of affected drugs means it's worth confirming your specific regimen first.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.

Midazolam (Versed)

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, appears to increase the metabolism of midazolam in human liver microsomes by up to 52%. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase the metabolism and reduce the effects of midazolam. However, this effect is unlikely.

Yes. Based on its ingredients, Mandarin Fruit Powder has a known interaction with 643 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mandarin Fruit Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is mandarin fruit powder safe to eat every day?

Will this powder interact with my blood pressure medication?
Mandarin contains compounds that may affect how your liver breaks down a broad group of medications, which includes some blood pressure drugs. We can't say for certain without knowing your specific medication, so use the checker on this page or talk with your pharmacist about your exact prescription before starting.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have pregnancy or lactation safety data on file for mandarin. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this powder is right for you during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — they can weigh the facts specific to your situation.
