HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Marshmallow by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Marshmallow Leaf Extract in dry form. Marshmallow leaf has been used traditionally to soothe mucous membranes, particularly in the throat and digestive tract.
The liquid form also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for marshmallow leaf isn't established in our data for the conditions it's commonly used for — including sore throat, cough, diarrhea, eczema, and leg ulcers. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for any of these uses.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means robust human studies are limited.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Marshmallow leaf extract is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited. The product is best avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable safety information to know it's okay.
If you're pregnant or nursing, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before using if you take lithium — dosing may need adjustment. Also double-check any oral medications, since marshmallow can interfere with absorption; wait 30 to 60 minutes between doses.
And mention blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs to your pharmacist, just to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Herbal Terra's Marshmallow is a traditional throat and digestive soother, but evidence for how well it works is thin. It's mainly a candidate if you're looking for a gentler, herbal option — and you don't take lithium or certain blood thinners.

Marshmallow by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Marshmallow Leaf Extract can interact with a couple of medication types, and one interaction is worth paying attention to.
The main concern is lithium (used for mood disorders). Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties — meaning it may increase urination — and theoretically that could reduce how your body clears lithium, raising its level in your blood.
If you take lithium, your dose might need adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Marshmallow also contains mucilage, a thick substance that can interfere with how your gut absorbs oral medications taken by mouth. To avoid this, wait 30 to 60 minutes after taking your regular medications before using this product.
There's also a minor theoretical concern with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs, though the risk is based on animal research of marshmallow flower — this product contains the leaf, which is less likely to pose a problem.
Alternatively if you're on any of these medications, use the interaction checker below with your exact drug names and doses before starting.

For each ingredient in Marshmallow with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Marshmallow Leaf Extract, Dry
Lithium
Theoretically, due to potential diuretic effects, marshmallow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties. To avoid lithium toxicity, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when used with marshmallow.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
