Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin that plays a role in converting food into energy and supporting the health of your skin, hair, and nails. You're getting 5,000 micrograms (mcg) per capsule.

The remaining ingredients — cellulose, gelatin, and magnesium stearate — are inactive components that form and stabilize the capsule.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: nutritionally supports hair, nail and sugar metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Biotin deficiency, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Nail health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, which is rare but can happen in people with certain conditions or on specific medications. For other uses, the evidence is weaker: it's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis, and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for alopecia areata (hair loss).

If you're taking this for a reason beyond deficiency, talk with your pharmacist about what the science actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body excretes excess amounts in urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — a small number of people taking much larger doses (300 mg daily) reported brief loose stools.

One case report described a woman who developed a rare lung and heart lining inflammation after taking 10 mg of biotin daily for 2 months alongside other supplements and a heart medication, but whether biotin was the cause is unclear, and no similar cases have been reported since. That said, check with your doctor before starting a high-dose biotin supplement, especially if you have any ongoing health concerns.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have a confirmed biotin deficiency, this product can help. For hair, skin, or nail health in people without a deficiency, the science doesn't back it up yet.

Biotin at this dose is generally safe, but run it by your doctor or pharmacist first — especially if you have any medical conditions or take multiple supplements.

Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories: Common Questions

Does Mega Biotin 5000 mcg by Wonder Laboratories interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Mega Biotin 5000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mega Biotin 5000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow or improve my skin?
The evidence for hair growth (alopecia areata) isn't strong enough to rate — we just don't have enough reliable data. For other skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, it's rated possibly ineffective. Biotin works best if you actually have a biotin deficiency, which is uncommon. If you're hoping for cosmetic benefits, talk to your pharmacist about whether the science supports it for your situation.
Is biotin safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Yes — biotin is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary amounts and standard prenatal vitamin doses are appropriate. However, this is a high-dose supplement, so check with your doctor before taking it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Can I take this supplement with my other vitamins?
No interactions are documented between biotin and other medications or supplements in our data. That said, if you take several supplements, it's worth double-checking your full list with your pharmacist or doctor to make sure everything works well together.
What are the side effects?
Biotin is generally well tolerated. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild, temporary diarrhea. One isolated case reported lung and heart lining inflammation, but it's unclear whether biotin was responsible, and no similar cases have been reported since.
Is this dose (5,000 mcg) considered high-dose?
Yes, this is a high-dose supplement — normal dietary needs are much lower. The safety notes recommend checking with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin products, so do that before you start.
