Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: methylene blue, a pharmaceutical-grade compound at 1% concentration in liquid form. It also contains electrolytic iron as an inactive ingredient.

Methylene blue is a real drug — not simply a supplement — and carries genuine risks alongside its uses.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Methylene Blue product and its label doesn't state a use — see Methylene Blue's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The product facts we hold do not include effectiveness ratings for methylene blue in this form or dose. The data available focuses on its safety profile and drug interactions rather than its clinical benefit for any particular purpose.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Methylene blue is generally well tolerated when used as prescribed in pharmaceutical forms, though how it behaves in supplemental or non-prescription products remains unclear. Oral use may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and blue or green discoloration of urine and stool.

More serious effects — including hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia (a blood condition affecting oxygen) — have been reported. Because methylene blue is linked to harm to a developing baby, it should be avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor determines it's necessary.

There isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding, so you should talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in that situation.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Methylene Blue.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 315 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, tramadol, linezolid, and others that raise serotonin) or anticholinergic drugs (used for overactive bladder, Parkinson's disease, or other conditions). These are the main medication types documented to interact with methylene blue, and the risks are real.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Concomitant use may increase anticholinergic effects and adverse effects. In a case report, a critically-ill male in his mid-60s developed a toxicological process attributed to anticholinergic syndrome following treatment with methylene blue for vasoplegia. Symptoms included anhidrosis, fever, lactic acidosis, mucosal dryness, and pupil dilation. Potential exacerbating factors included renal failure and use of fentanyl intra-operatively.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Serotonergic Drugs

Combining serotonergic drugs with methylene blue can cause additive serotonergic effects, including serotonin syndrome. Methylene blue inhibits monoamine oxidase A. Intravenous or intrapulmonary use has resulted in serotonin syndrome, including reported fatalities, in patients taking some serotonergic drugs. This effect has not been reported with oral methylene blue. However, tell patients to avoid taking methylene blue with serotonergic drugs.

Methylene Blue Pharmaceutical Grade 1% Solution contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data was compiled by the HelloPharmacist pharmacy team from the manufacturer's product label; the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.

What side effects might I experience if I take this orally?
Common oral side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and dysuria (pain with urination). You'll likely notice your urine and stool turn blue or green. Rare but serious effects include hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia, a condition that affects how well your blood carries oxygen.
Is this a supplement or a drug?
Methylene blue is a real pharmaceutical drug, not a supplement. It has genuine therapeutic uses but also carries real risks. It should not be self-dosed casually — medical-grade forms need supervision.
Why do I need to check my medications before taking this?
Methylene blue interacts with a large number of drugs, particularly those that affect serotonin levels (like many antidepressants) and anticholinergic medications. These interactions can be serious, including serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Your doctor or pharmacist needs to see your full medication list before you start.
