Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: mullein leaf glycerite liquid extract. Mullein is a plant whose leaves have been used traditionally to support respiratory comfort.

The extract is made by soaking the leaf in glycerin, a natural sweetening agent. The liquid also includes mint flavor for taste, and glycerin itself serves as both the extraction medium and an inactive ingredient (excipient).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Mullein's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: respiratory health and cough relief.
  • We looked for evidence on: Asthma, Bronchitis, Cough, Influenza, Pneumonia, chest congestion — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Mullein is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Bronchitis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Mullein is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Asthma, Cough, Influenza, Pneumonia.

The evidence for mullein leaf isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for bronchitis, asthma, cough, diarrhea, or migraine headache — the conditions most commonly cited for this herb.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means clinical trials solid enough to confirm benefit haven't been done, or aren't robust enough to draw firm conclusions from.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mullein is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited — we simply don't have a ton of long-term studies in people. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.

A small number of case reports have described dermatitis (skin inflammation) after skin contact with the whole plant or from breathing in plant dust, usually in people with occupational exposure or sensitivity to other plants.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Mullein.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel. Mullein has documented mild blood-thinning effects that could add to what your medication does.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Mullein leaf liquid may be worth considering if you're looking for traditional respiratory support, but the evidence for it isn't established yet. If you're on a blood thinner or antiplatelet medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the herb has mild blood-thinning effects of its own.

Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider before you start.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Lab tests on extracts from different parts of common and dense-flowered mullein plants show that they do have some blood-thinning effects, as they increase the time it takes for blood to clot. This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.

Mullein Leaf Mint Flavor by TerraVita: Common Questions

Does Mullein Leaf Mint Flavor by TerraVita interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Mullein Leaf Mint Flavor has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mullein Leaf Mint Flavor contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is mullein safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against it in both situations — there isn't enough information to know it's safe. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Does this actually work for cough or bronchitis?
We don't have enough reliable evidence to say. Mullein is used traditionally for respiratory support, but the clinical trials backing that use aren't solid enough to confirm benefit in our data.
Why is it a liquid extract instead of a dried leaf?
A glycerite liquid extract means the mullein leaves are soaked in glycerin to pull out the plant's active compounds. It's a way to concentrate the herb and make it easier to dose and take by mouth.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The liquid contains glycerin (which also serves as the extraction medium) and mint flavor. These aren't active — they're there to preserve the extract and make it taste better.
Can I get a skin reaction from this product?
Skin reactions are rare and have been reported only from direct contact with the whole plant or from breathing in plant dust, mainly in people who work with the plant. Taking the liquid by mouth hasn't been linked to dermatitis in our data.
How long can I safely use this?
Mullein is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but human safety data are limited. We don't have solid information on long-term use, so it's worth checking with your pharmacist or doctor about how long is right for you.
