Iodine from food and normal supplement doses is generally well tolerated. However, high doses can cause thyroid problems — including both overactive and underactive thyroid — as well as goiter, nausea, headache, and a metallic taste.

Very rarely, some people are hypersensitive to iodine and can develop serious reactions like swelling of the throat (angioedema) or hives. Long-term use of very large amounts has been linked to acnelike skin lesions.

During pregnancy, adequate iodine matters for the baby's development, but only use the amount your doctor recommends and avoid high-dose products. Some iodine passes into breast milk, so follow your doctor's guidance while nursing.

Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.

Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
