Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: NutraFlora FOS, a type of fructo-oligosaccharide. FOS are short-chain carbohydrates that act as a prebiotic — they're meant to feed the good bacteria in your gut.
The product contains no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on FOS doesn't establish that it works for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, or high cholesterol. For each of these uses, the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it.
If you're considering FOS for one of these reasons, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
FOS are generally well tolerated, especially at the amounts you'd eat in food. At supplement-level doses, though, the safety data is limited, so it's worth checking with your doctor before starting.
The most common side effects are abdominal pain, bloating, and gas — especially at higher doses. Interestingly, a review of eight small studies found that FOS at doses of 2.5 to 15 grams daily for up to 8 weeks didn't actually increase these symptoms any more than placebo did, though some people do experience them.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. Run your exact medications through the checker on this page to be thorough.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in supporting your gut bacteria with a prebiotic, FOS is generally well tolerated and has no documented medication interactions. Just be aware that the evidence for specific health claims is weak, and start with a lower dose to see how your digestion handles it.
Talk with your pharmacist if you have ongoing bloating or gas, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
