Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported with oral astaxanthin are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red fecal color (a harmless discoloration).

At typical doses, a small number of trial participants experienced increased bowel movements or red stool; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), some people reported severe stomach or abdominal pain. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know if it's safe in those situations.
