Acalabrutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Calquence (acalabrutinib). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication. In lab-dish studies, astaxanthin seems to speed up that enzyme. If the same thing happened in people, your body might break down acalabrutinib a little faster, which could lower its levels and, in theory, make it less effective against your lymphoma or leukemia.

I want to be honest with you though: this is based only on test-tube and cell research, and it has never actually been shown in humans. So it's more of a caution flag than a proven problem. Since acalabrutinib is a serious cancer medicine, please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding astaxanthin so they can weigh in on your specific situation.

What Is Acalabrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Calquence

Calquence is used to treat adults with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) — either newly diagnosed (in combination with bendamustine and rituximab, for patients who are not candidates for a stem cell transplant) or previously treated (after at least one prior therapy). It is also used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).

Both the capsule and tablet forms of Calquence are approved for all three of these uses. The specific combination regimen and treatment schedule depend on the condition being treated and what other medicines are used alongside it — your care team will map that out for you.
