What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic maca powder. Maca is a root vegetable native to Peru, traditionally used as a food supplement.
The product has no listed inactive ingredients or fillers.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for maca isn't established in the data we hold. Effectiveness ratings span six uses — amenorrhea (absent menstrual periods), anemia of chronic disease, antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, and osteoporosis — but all carry insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
In plain terms: we don't have solid proof it works for any of these, though that doesn't mean it doesn't; it means larger or better-designed studies are needed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maca is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement safety hasn't been studied over the long term. If you're pregnant, the safety data advises against using maca in supplement amounts — there isn't enough data to know if it's safe.
The same goes for breastfeeding: there isn't enough reliable information to say either way, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist. One reported adverse effect: consuming fresh, uncooked maca may cause stomach pain; this powder is processed, so that risk may differ.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. That doesn't guarantee none exist — it means we hold no monograph data showing maca affects your medications.
If you take any drugs and want extra reassurance, use the search tool on this page or ask your pharmacist.

General Statements
In 1994, we were fortunate to lead a botanical expedition through the Peruvian Andes to search for maca. It soon became apparent that maca was incredibly elusive and rare. It was estimated at the time, there was only enough maca in Peru to feed a few small villages. To ancient Peruvians, maca root was a precious commodity. For almost two centuries it was commonly traded for gold and exported to feed the kings of Spain. In the late 20th century, maca slipped into obscurity and remained hidden away at 14,000 feet elevation, teetering on the brink of extinction. With the help of the Peruvian government, we visited universities and seed germplasm collections throughout Peru. Using USDA permits, we were the first to export maca plants and seeds to botanical garden, universities and researchers in North America and around the world.
