HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Chaga Mushroom by Dr. Mercola
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Partial disclosure
The active ingredients listed are polysaccharides, polyphenols, beta-glucan, chaga mushroom blend, chaga extract, and chaga powder. Beta-glucan and chaga extract are the two components with interaction and safety data on file here.
Polysaccharides, the chaga mushroom blend, and chaga powder are listed as group entries, so their individual components are the ones that appear in the data. The product also lists inactive ingredients: gum acacia, tapioca dextrose, sunflower lecithin, insulin, tapioca maltodextrin, palm oil, guar gum, and carnauba wax.
These are non-active additives that help form the tablet or pill.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
For beta-glucan, the data rates the evidence as Likely Effective for dyslipidemia (abnormal blood fats) and coronary heart disease (CHD). For chaga, the data lists cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate, meaning there is not enough reliable evidence to judge whether it works for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-glucans from food sources are generally well tolerated. Concentrated supplements lack safety data, so the data advises caution.
Skin reactions and contact dermatitis have been reported with a topical beta-glucan cream, and in one pediatric trial one of 44 patients had a temporary rise in liver enzymes after taking oral beta-glucans. Chaga is generally used in foods and teas, but human safety data are limited and a few risks have been reported.
Excessive chaga intake has been linked to two cases of kidney failure and one case of acute nephropathy, which the data attributes to its high oxalate content.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, which are rated Moderate for chaga extract. Antihypertensive drugs, antidiabetes drugs, and immunosuppressants are also rated Moderate.
No interactions are documented for polyphenols because we could not check them.
The bottom line
