What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin powder. It's made from pumpkin seeds and seeds are thought to have mild diuretic properties (they may increase urine production).
The powder form is a concentrated way to get pumpkin's compounds without eating whole seeds. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on pumpkin for most uses is thin. It's rated possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges.
For everything else on file — hair loss, painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis), parasitic infections, and urinary tract infections — the evidence isn't strong enough to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin eaten as food is generally well tolerated. The powder form is a concentrated supplement, and while it's generally well tolerated too, there isn't much safety data on concentrated seed supplements.
Most people who take pumpkin products experience no problems, but some report mild stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported.
There are also two case reports of hair loss after eating bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash, which researchers linked to a toxin called cucurbitacin — found mainly in wild pumpkins rather than cultivated ones. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough data to know whether concentrated pumpkin supplements are safe; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium for bipolar disorder, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting this product — pumpkin may raise your lithium levels. No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're curious about pumpkin for prostate health, this powder is generally well tolerated. If you take lithium, check with us or your doctor first — this product might affect your blood levels.
