What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: hoodia, a plant extract at 500 mg per capsule. The capsules themselves are made from bovine gelatin, which is an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Not established
The data we hold rates hoodia's effectiveness for obesity as insufficient reliable evidence to rate — meaning the research so far hasn't established whether it works for that purpose.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Limited safety data exist for hoodia, and side effects have been reported. You may experience minor symptoms such as skin sensation disturbances, headache, dizziness, giddiness, and nausea.
There is also concern that hoodia may increase blood pressure and heart rate. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those states.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use blood pressure medications (antihypertensives or beta-blockers), antidiabetes drugs, or insulin — hoodia may reduce how well blood pressure drugs work and may increase the blood sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medications and insulin, raising the risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hoodia is best avoided if you take blood pressure medications or diabetes drugs, because it may interfere with how they work and raise your risk of serious effects like high blood pressure or low blood sugar. If you take insulin or any medication for blood pressure or blood sugar, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product.
Limited safety data and the lack of reliable evidence for its intended use mean you'll want personalized advice from your own healthcare provider.

Hoodia 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hoodia 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com interacts with several classes of blood pressure and blood sugar medications through its single active ingredient.
The most serious concern involves antihypertensive drugs (drugs that lower blood pressure) — hoodia can raise blood pressure, which may block these medications from working and increase your risk of high blood pressure returning.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beta-blockers (another blood pressure medication class) are also affected at moderate severity; hoodia may stimulate receptors that these drugs are meant to block, potentially reducing how well they control your heart rate and pressure. Antidiabetes drugs and insulin face a moderate interaction as well — animal research suggests hoodia may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
If you take any of these medications, your blood pressure and blood sugar will need monitoring.
Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Hoodia 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hoodia
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
