Hoodia and Bendroflumethiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide

Bendroflumethiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide-type water pill that gently lowers your blood pressure by helping your body get rid of extra salt and fluid. Here's the concern with hoodia: some research suggests it can actually nudge blood pressure up. If that happens, it could work against your bendroflumethiazide and make it harder to keep your numbers where your doctor wants them.

To be fair, this is a theoretical interaction based on how hoodia seems to behave, not on studies of people taking both together. So I wouldn't panic. But since hoodia hasn't been shown to help with weight loss anyway, there's little reason to risk it. If you do try it, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendroflumethiazide page

“Bendroflumethiazide, a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure, sits at the serious end of the interaction spectrum, and the ten major-rated entries deserve attention first. Most of the 227 supplements on file either stack their own blood-pressure-lowering effect on top of the drug's or deepen the potassium loss it alrea…”

About Hoodia

What is Hoodia?

Hoodia
  • Appetite suppression
  • Weight loss
  • Reducing food cravings
  • Traditional use for hunger and thirst on long journeys

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. The few quality studies done have not shown meaningful weight loss, and some products on the market may not even contain real hoodia. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
