Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide

Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

If you take hydrochlorothiazide (often sold as Microzide or HydroDiuril) to keep your blood pressure down, here's the concern with hoodia. Some research suggests hoodia can nudge blood pressure upward. Since your water pill is working in the opposite direction, lowering blood pressure by helping your kidneys clear extra salt and fluid, hoodia could partly work against it and make your numbers harder to control.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how hoodia behaves, not something well documented in people taking these two together. Still, if you check your pressure at home and notice it creeping up, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything. Don't stop your hydrochlorothiazide on your own.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
