Captopril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the basic concern with pairing hoodia and captopril. Captopril is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes your blood vessels to bring your blood pressure down. Some research suggests hoodia may actually nudge blood pressure up, which could work against what your captopril is trying to do. In theory, that tug-of-war might leave your blood pressure higher than your doctor wants, or make your readings bounce around.

I'll be honest with you though: this is a theoretical worry based on how hoodia behaves, not something proven to happen in people taking captopril. Still, since blood pressure control matters, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding hoodia, and keep an eye on your home readings if you do.

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. The few quality studies done have not shown meaningful weight loss, and some products on the market may not even contain real hoodia. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Captopril Used For?

Brand names: Capoten, Acepril

Captopril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (weakened pumping function of the heart) in stable patients after a heart attack. For the heart attack indication, it helps improve survival and reduces the chance of developing full heart failure.

Captopril tablets are also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by diabetes) in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who have retinopathy and significant protein in their urine. It reduces the risk of the kidneys failing to the point of needing dialysis or a transplant.
