Why this applies to Minoxidil

Minoxidil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take minoxidil as a blood pressure pill (Loniten). Minoxidil works by relaxing and widening your blood vessels to bring your pressure down. Some research suggests hoodia can actually nudge blood pressure up, so pairing the two could work against each other and make your minoxidil less effective at controlling your numbers.

This is a theoretical concern based on how hoodia behaves, not a heavily documented problem, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, if your blood pressure creeps higher, you might notice headaches or feel off. If you use minoxidil only as the scalp foam for hair (Rogaine), this is much less of a worry. Either way, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting hoodia.

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. What Is Minoxidil Used For?

Minoxidil tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) — specifically in patients who haven't responded well to other blood pressure medications. They are a powerful option reserved for difficult-to-control cases.

Topical minoxidil products — including solutions, sprays, gels, and foams from many brands — are used to regrow hair on the top of the scalp (called the vertex). Products labeled for men and for women may differ; for example, Bosley MD Regular Strength for Women and Dizop Minoxidil Topical Gel are each labeled for their specific intended users.
