Why this applies to Spironolactone

Spironolactone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take spironolactone for blood pressure or fluid retention: some research suggests hoodia may actually nudge your blood pressure up. Since spironolactone works in the opposite direction (helping your body shed extra sodium and water while keeping potassium), adding hoodia could theoretically work against it and make your blood pressure harder to control.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things behave, not proven cases of people having problems together. Spironolactone isn't a prodrug, so hoodia isn't blocking how it's activated. The worry is simply that hoodia might blunt the benefit. If you'd like to try hoodia, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. The few quality studies done have not shown meaningful weight loss, and some products on the market may not even contain real hoodia. About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
