Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the concern in plain terms: your amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide combo (Moduretic) is a water pill that helps lower your blood pressure. Some research suggests hoodia can actually nudge blood pressure up. So putting the two together could work against your medication and leave your pressure higher than you and your doctor want, which sort of defeats the purpose of taking the pill.

I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how hoodia seems to behave, not proof from studies of people taking both together. Hoodia also doesn't have strong evidence it even helps with weight. If you're watching your blood pressure, the safest move is a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
