Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: pantethine, a form of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) that your body converts into compounds it uses for energy and fat metabolism. The softgel capsule itself is made from gelatin and filled with rice bran oil, sunflower lecithin, and beeswax — these are inactive ingredients that help deliver the pantethine.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy serum lipids within normal range.
  • We looked for evidence on: Hyperlipidemia, Hyperlipoproteinemia, dyslipidemia, cholesterol management.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pantethine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Hyperlipoproteinemia (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Pantethine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Hyperlipidemia.

The evidence for pantethine is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for high cholesterol and fat disorders (hyperlipoproteinemia).

For athletic performance and general high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. The same goes for a rare neurological condition called pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration — the data simply isn't established in what we hold.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pantethine is generally well tolerated in research studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are mild digestive complaints: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, bloating, and gas.

Rarely, mild itching has been reported. Because there isn't enough reliable safety data, it's best to avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Safety during breastfeeding has not been well studied, so caution is advised if you're nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Pantethine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking NOW Pantethine 300 mg, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any anticoagulant (blood thinner) or antiplatelet medications — pantethine may increase bleeding risk with these drugs. The interaction is moderate severity.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're interested in pantethine for high cholesterol or fat disorders, the evidence shows it may help — but if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, you'll need to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first because of bleeding risk. The digestive side effects are usually mild.

Because long-term safety data are sparse, talk it over with your own healthcare provider before you start.

Formula

Pantethine is a highly absorbable and biologically active form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5). Pantethine is a precursor in the formation of coenzyme A (CoA), an essential cofactor for lipid, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism. Pantethine also helps to support proper cholesterol production and fat storage in the liver, which can help to promote healthy body fat distribution. It has been shown in clinical studies to assist in the maintenance of already healthy serum lipid levels for the support of a healthy cardiovascular system when used in conjunction with a healthy diet.

Pantethine 300 mg by NOW: Common Questions

Does Pantethine 300 mg by NOW interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pantethine 300 mg has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pantethine 300 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is pantethine, and what does it do in the body?
Pantethine is a form of vitamin B5. Your body converts it into compounds that help you produce energy and metabolize fats. It's thought to have a role in managing cholesterol and other blood lipids.
Does pantethine actually work for high cholesterol?
For high cholesterol and fat disorders (hyperlipoproteinemia), pantethine is rated possibly effective — meaning there's some evidence it may help, but it's not definitive. For general high cholesterol, the evidence isn't reliable enough to say one way or the other.
What side effects might I experience?
Most side effects are mild digestive complaints: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and stomach discomfort. Rarely, mild itching has been reported. These tend to be mild and resolve on their own.
Is pantethine safe to use long-term?
Pantethine is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. Because we don't have enough long-term data, it's best to avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise. Talk with your doctor about how long it's safe for you to take it.
Can I take pantethine if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough data on pantethine's safety during breastfeeding, so caution is advised if you're nursing. For pregnancy safety, the data isn't on file — talk with your doctor or pharmacist to decide what's right for you.
