HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pau D'Arco by Village Vitality
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco, a South American tree bark used traditionally for various health purposes. The capsule itself is made with modified cellulose as an inactive binder.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on pau d'arco's effectiveness is insufficient. We don't have reliable data to rate whether it works for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or dysmenorrhea — so we can't tell you whether it'll help with these uses.
If you're considering it for any of these purposes, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at normal doses, but safety data in humans is limited. At higher doses — particularly above 1.5 grams daily of the lapachol compound — it can cause anemia, increased bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Occupational exposure to pau d'arco sawdust has caused asthma and skin irritation in some people, though this is less relevant when taking it as a capsule. Safety data isn't strong enough during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
The facts advise against it in pregnancy due to possible harm to the developing baby; for breastfeeding, there isn't enough information to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before starting if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, aspirin, clopidogrel, and many others. Pau d'arco may increase your bleeding risk with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pau d'Arco may appeal to someone interested in traditional herbal remedies, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. The bigger concern is its interaction with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs, which carry a Moderate risk of increased bleeding.
If you take any clotting medications, check your specific drugs before starting. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are times to avoid it or get personalized advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Pau D'Arco by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pau d'Arco by Village Vitality interacts with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (medications that reduce clotting).
The main concern is Moderate: pau d'arco may increase bleeding risk when combined with these drugs. In-lab research shows it can reduce how platelets clump together and may interfere with vitamin K, a key clotting factor.
One clinical study found that the lapachol compound in pau d'arco — when taken in doses above 1.5 grams daily — raises bleeding risk even further.
