PhytoArtemisinin has two active ingredients: artemisinin (the key compound from Sweet Annie) and Gleditsia (spine) extract. Artemisinin is used in herbal medicine primarily for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), though it's also studied for malaria, joint inflammation, and liver disease.
The product also contains two inactive ingredients — Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose and L-Leucine — which are a capsule binder and flow agent, respectively.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Artemisinin is rated possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever). For other uses listed — nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Artemisinin is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting.
Rarely, it can cause hepatotoxicity (liver damage) — one case was documented in which a patient developed hepatitis after taking artemisinin 200 mg three times daily for 10 days, with elevated liver enzymes and dark urine that resolved within two weeks of stopping. One mild allergic reaction to Sweet Annie tea has been reported (rash and cough).
Taken sublingually at low doses, it may cause tongue numbness or throat itching in people sensitive to it. Avoid PhytoArtemisinin during pregnancy because of possible harm to the developing baby.
Do not use while breastfeeding — there is not enough safety information. Quality and dose vary widely across products, and this supplement should not replace proven treatments.

PhytoArtemisinin contains pure artemisinin (Qinghaosu), the active constituent of the herb Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood), combined with phytosaponins.

Suggested/Recommended/Usage/Directions
Suggested Use As a dietary supplement, 1 or 2 capsules two or three times daily before meals, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Artemisinin is best taken as part of a program that includes appropriate liver support nutrients.
Precautions
Sensitive individuals may want to take with food.
Caution: Not indicated for pregnant or nursing women.
This product should only be used under under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner with ongoing monitoring of liver enzymes and hemoglobin during its use. In rare cases may cause idiosyncratic liver dysfunction. Combining with antioxidants or iron may theoretically decrease effectiveness.

Artemisinin also affects how your body metabolizes certain medications. It may speed up the breakdown of drugs processed by your liver via CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 pathways, which could lower their blood levels and reduce how well they work — both rated Moderate.
The picture is complex because artemisinin appears to induce (speed up) these pathways, but the whole Sweet Annie extract seems to do the opposite in lab tests, so the real-world effect is unclear.

Artemisinin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
