Probio-40 is a 6-ingredient probiotic capsule. Its active ingredients are several species of beneficial bacteria—Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14), Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Bifidobacterium lactis—plus a prebiotic fiber called fructooligosaccharide (FOS) to feed those bacteria, and a Marine Polysaccharide Complex.
The inactive ingredients are cellulose, rice maltodextrin, and L-leucine, which are fillers and capsule material.

The evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus suggests it may help with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For fructooligosaccharide and the other bacterial strains in this blend, the data we hold does not establish effectiveness for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, or high cholesterol—the evidence is either insufficient or not yet rated.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Fructooligosaccharide can cause gas, bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence, and other digestive discomfort, especially at higher doses, though small clinical trials suggest these symptoms are mild at doses under 10 grams per day.
Because the probiotics in this product contain live organisms, there is a theoretical risk they could cause infection in some patients, though this appears rare. Limited safety data exist for supplement-level doses of FOS, so talk with your doctor before starting.
Lactobacillus acidophilus in pregnancy is possibly safe, but lactation data are not on file for it.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
