What’s inside
Full disclosure
Herbal Terra's Pumpkin contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed extract in dry form, suspended in a liquid base of alcohol, water, and glycerin. Pumpkin seed has a long history in herbal medicine, particularly for urinary and prostate health.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pumpkin is mixed. It's considered possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can affect urination.
For androgenic alopecia (male pattern hair loss), urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder pain), and intestinal parasites, the evidence is insufficient to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as food is well tolerated by most adults. Concentrated seed supplements like this one are generally well tolerated too, though the safety data on concentrated formulas is more limited than on whole pumpkin.
The most common side effects in trials and reports are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported.
There are also two case reports of temporary hair loss after consuming bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with very high levels of cucurbitacin, a naturally occurring compound. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to know either way—pumpkin as food is fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement like this one if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, speak with your pharmacist or doctor before using this product—pumpkin may increase lithium levels (Moderate severity). No other medication interactions are documented for this ingredient in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have benign prostate enlargement and want to try a natural option, pumpkin seed extract may be worth considering. Do not use this product if you take lithium without checking with your pharmacist first.
Talk to your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medications.
