What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed extract. The extract comes in powder form with no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is strongest for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — enlarged prostate — where pumpkin seed shows possibly effective results. For androgenic alopecia (hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder inflammation), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as a food is well tolerated. Concentrated seed supplements are generally well tolerated in adults, though we don't have enough data on concentrated supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and considering this product.
The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, anaphylaxis has been reported.
If the product tastes bitter, it may contain a compound called cucurbitacin, which in high concentrations has been linked to hair loss and severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in rare cases.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — pumpkin seed extract may raise lithium levels and require a dose change.
