HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pumpkin Seed Extract by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed extract. It's a concentrated form of compounds from pumpkin seeds, with no inactive fillers or other ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pumpkin seed extract is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — that's enlarged prostate — based on the evidence we hold. For other uses — androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections — the evidence isn't yet established well enough to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as a food is generally well tolerated. Concentrated seed supplements are generally well tolerated in most adults, though some trial participants reported mild abdominal discomfort.
The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting; anaphylaxis is rare. There are two case reports of transient hair loss a few weeks after consuming bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash high in cucurbitacin (a natural compound), though this is uncommon.
Because the safety of concentrated pumpkin seed supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn't been well studied, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — pumpkin seed extract may increase lithium levels in your blood and require a dose adjustment.
