Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: natural source of essential fatty acids.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

The evidence for pumpkin seed oil is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—an enlarged prostate common in older men.

For other uses we hold data on—androgenic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasite infection, and urinary tract infections—the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it.

Pumpkin seed oil is generally well tolerated in adults. The most common side effects from oral use are mild: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported. There are also two case reports of hair loss 1–3 weeks after consuming high-concentration pumpkin or squash products, thought to be due to a compound called cucurbitacin found in wild varieties.

Safety data on concentrated seed-oil supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
