Pygeum Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pygeum against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic pygeum (Prunus africana) dried bark liquid extract. Pygeum is a botanical extract traditionally used for men's prostate health.
The product also contains menstruum, an inactive carrier ingredient used in liquid herbal extracts.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Pygeum is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that can cause urinary symptoms in older men. For other uses listed in the research—including Alzheimer disease, malaria, sexual desire, and psychosis—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate it reliably.
That doesn't mean it won't help; it means more or better research is needed to know.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pygeum is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. In clinical trials, some people reported nausea and abdominal pain, but the rate was similar to placebo.
The safety data advises against use in pregnancy since pygeum is designed for men's prostate health and hasn't been studied safely in pregnant people. There isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. Run your specific medications through the tool on this page before you start, or confirm with your pharmacist that pygeum won't affect how your drugs work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Pygeum is a reasonable choice if you're looking for a plant-based supplement for prostate health and the research supports its use for BPH. Because it has no documented drug interactions, it may fit into your routine more easily than some other supplements.
That said, long-term safety data are sparse, so discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you take other medications or have ongoing health concerns.
