Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: iodine at 150 micrograms per tablet. Iodine is an essential mineral your body needs to make thyroid hormones and support metabolism.
The inactive ingredients are dicalcium phosphate, vegetable cellulose, stearic acid, and less than 2% of other additives — standard tablet binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Iodine is likely effective for protecting your thyroid if you're exposed to radiation and for correcting iodine deficiency, which is a real public health problem in many parts of the world. The evidence is possibly effective for reducing oral sores (oral mucositis) and gum inflammation (periodontitis), though the data on those uses is less robust than for thyroid protection.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine at normal dietary amounts is well tolerated. The catch is that high doses can damage your thyroid — causing it to either overproduce hormones (hyperthyroidism) or underproduce them (hypothyroidism) — along with nausea, headache, metallic taste, and in rare cases, serious allergic reactions.
At this dose (150 mcg), you're in a moderate range, but monitoring matters if you have thyroid disease or take thyroid medication. In pregnancy, adequate iodine is important for your baby's development, but only the amount your doctor advises — avoid high-dose supplements without medical guidance.
During breastfeeding, some iodine passes into milk, so follow your healthcare provider's recommendation. If you've had any unusual reactions to iodine-containing foods or contrast dyes at medical imaging, mention that before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Sea Kelp, double-check if you're on lithium (a mood stabilizer), antithyroid medications, or amiodarone (a heart drug). All three carry Moderate-severity interactions with iodine that affect thyroid function.
If you take any of these, confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sea Kelp can be useful for iodine deficiency or radiation exposure protection, especially if you don't get enough iodine from salt, dairy, or seafood. If you take lithium, antithyroid drugs, or amiodarone, or if you have any thyroid disorder, this product isn't a straightforward add-on — talk with your doctor or pharmacist first to see if it fits your situation and whether thyroid monitoring makes sense.

Sea Kelp 150 mcg by Vitamin World Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sea Kelp 150 mcg by Vitamin World contains iodine, which interacts with lithium, antithyroid drugs, and amiodarone — all at Moderate severity.
The most serious concern is with lithium: combining iodine with this mood stabilizer can add up to thyroid suppression (hypothyroidism), so thyroid function needs monitoring if you take both.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Iodine can also interfere with how antithyroid drugs work. Because iodine at high doses can swing your thyroid either overactive or underactive depending on your history, taking this supplement while using antithyroid medication could throw off the drug's effect.
Amiodarone (a heart rhythm drug) is another one to flag — it's already packed with iodine, and adding more from this product risks pushing your iodine to unsafe levels and damaging your thyroid. Again, thyroid monitoring is important.
Altogether, these interactions span 7 individual medications. Before you start Sea Kelp, run your prescriptions through the interaction checker below — especially if you take lithium, any thyroid medication, or amiodarone.

Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
