SereniSelect Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking SereniSelect against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
SereniSelect contains 3 active ingredients. L-theanine is an amino acid that may support calm focus.
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a neurotransmitter involved in relaxation and sleep. Holy basil leaf extract is a plant-based ingredient traditionally used for stress support.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients—cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, and vegetable stearate—which are fillers and binders that help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
For L-theanine, the evidence supports it as possibly effective for cognitive function; however, data on age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, anxiety, OCD, and cancer are insufficient to rate. For GABA, evidence is insufficient to rate its use for anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, cerebral palsy, or chronic bronchitis.
For holy basil, evidence is also insufficient to rate its effectiveness for anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, or diabetes. In short, while these ingredients are used for relaxation and cognitive support, the science backing them for specific health goals isn't yet established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine and GABA are both generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but long-term safety has not been well studied. Common side effects from L-theanine include headache, drowsiness, and increased dream activity.
GABA may cause drowsiness, nausea, muscle weakness, gastric upset, or minor throat burning. Holy basil is generally well tolerated in the short term, with loose stools and nausea reported in a small number of trial participants.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy for all three ingredients; L-theanine and GABA have insufficient data and should be avoided, while holy basil is rated possibly unsafe. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable information on any of the three, so it's best to avoid all of them unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking SereniSelect, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin)—holy basil may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, or sedating drugs; L-theanine, GABA, and holy basil all have documented interactions with these drug types.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
SereniSelect may be considered by someone looking for relaxation and cognitive support, but it's not right for you if you take blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, diabetes medications, or sedating drugs—the interactions are real and potentially serious. Even if you're not on those medications, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any prescription medication.

SereniSelect by Moss Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
SereniSelect by Moss Nutrition contains three active ingredients—L-theanine, GABA, and holy basil leaf extract—that together have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is a Moderate-severity interaction: holy basil may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs, because animal research suggests it can slow clotting time.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-theanine and GABA both interact with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) at Moderate severity, potentially lowering blood pressure further and raising the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension). L-theanine and GABA also both carry Minor-severity concerns with sedating drugs (CNS depressants)—they may add to drowsiness, though it's unclear how clinically relevant this is in real-world use.
Holy basil has two additional Moderate interactions: it may increase low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) risk with diabetes medications, and it might boost the sedative effect of the barbiturate pentobarbital (Nembutal), though the human relevance is unknown. Altogether, these interactions span 747 individual medications.
None of the three ingredients were found to have no interactions documented. Before you start SereniSelect, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, diabetes drugs, or sedating medications you're taking.

For each ingredient in SereniSelect with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
GABA
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
Holy Basil leaf extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
