What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Spearmint against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Alvita Spearmint is a single-ingredient tea: spearmint leaf. There are no other active ingredients and no added fillers or inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that spearmint works for any of the uses it's been studied for — age-related cognitive decline, cognitive function, flatulence, irritable bowel syndrome, postoperative nausea and vomiting, or osteoarthritis all carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the data available to us isn't enough to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
As a tea made from spearmint leaves at food amounts, spearmint is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. Allergic reactions are rare but possible — topical exposure (skin contact with the leaf or oil, or from toothpaste or gum) can trigger allergic dermatitis or swelling of the lips or mouth in sensitive people.
One person taking a concentrated extract reported anxiety, though it's unclear whether spearmint caused it. Because this product is a tea rather than a concentrated supplement, typical use carries less risk, but check with your doctor before using concentrated spearmint products or if you have a known spearmint or mint allergy.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Alvita Spearmint, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can damage your liver) or CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or similar drugs) — both carry Moderate-severity interactions with spearmint. Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Alvita Spearmint tea is a single-ingredient herbal tea generally well tolerated as a beverage. If you take sedatives, sleep aids, or medications that can damage the liver, run those drugs through the interaction checker below first.
Whether it actually helps with any specific condition isn't established in our data. Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, nursing, allergic to mint, or taking any regular medications.

General Statements
The Alvita Story… In 1922, a new era for tea consumption began in America. The herb alfalfa, long known for its beneficial nutrients, was packaged in tea bags and sold to an emerging health food market. This product became known as Alvita and set the standard for future herbal teas. Today, Alvita represents more than forty single-ingredient teas, each one uniquely distinct, just like the individuals who drink them.
Herbs are gifts from the earth. Alvita takes its stewardship seriously by offering carefully harvested teas in earth-friendly packaging. Our beautifully illustrated boxes are made using recycled paperboard and our English, pillow style tea bags are oxygen bleached, not chlorine treated. Spearmint monograph & interactionsSpearmint by Alvita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Alvita Spearmint tea contains spearmint, which has documented interactions with two medication categories.
The most serious concern is with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can damage the liver) — spearmint at high doses might increase liver damage risk, a Moderate-severity interaction. The interaction involves spearmint's potential to raise liver enzymes and cause liver cell damage, especially when used as a concentrated supplement over time.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spearmint also interacts with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, and similar drugs) at Moderate severity. Animal research suggests spearmint's active compound has sedative properties, but human studies show mixed results — chewing spearmint-flavored gum actually increased alertness — so the practical effect in people remains unclear.
Because this is a tea made from spearmint leaves at typical food amounts, the risk is lower than with concentrated supplements or oils. Still, if you take medications in either of these categories, check your exact drugs with the search tool below before starting this product.

Spearmint
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, spearmint might alter the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Animal research suggests that (-)-carvone, a major constituent of spearmint, has sedative effects. However, in humans, chewing spearmint-flavored gum induced arousal effects.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
