Spirulina Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Spirulina against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
GNC Earth Genius Spirulina is a single-ingredient supplement: spirulina powder, a blue-green algae. The capsule itself contains gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), and stearic acid (a thickener).
Does it work?
Not established
Spirulina is possibly effective for high blood pressure (hypertension). For acne, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), iron-deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence we have isn't strong enough to say whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea — along with dizziness, fatigue, and headache.
Allergic reactions are rare but have been documented, including rashes, itching, and in one case a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) in a teenager. A few cases of mild gum bleeding and bruising have also been reported.
There's an important safety caution: spirulina quality varies widely, and some products can be contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. There isn't enough safety data on spirulina for pregnancy and lactation, and contamination risk is a concern — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with us if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), immunosuppressants, or diabetes medications. These Moderate-severity interactions have been documented for spirulina.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spirulina may help with high blood pressure, but the evidence for other uses is unclear. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or immunosuppressants, check with your pharmacist first.
Quality and contamination are real concerns with this product, so choose carefully.

Spirulina by GNC Earth Genius Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Earth Genius Spirulina contains one active ingredient, spirulina powder, which has documented interactions with three types of medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners and clot-prevention medications like warfarin and aspirin). Spirulina has shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in lab studies, which means it could theoretically increase bleeding risk if combined with these medications — though one small preliminary study suggested this risk may be unlikely in practice.
This is rated Moderate severity.
Spirulina may also interfere with immunosuppressant medications (drugs that deliberately lower immune function, often used after transplants or for severe autoimmune conditions). Because spirulina stimulates the immune system, it could work against what these medications are trying to do.
Additionally, taking spirulina with diabetes medications carries a Moderate-severity theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Human research does show spirulina can lower blood sugar in people with diabetes, though it hasn't been shown to improve long-term blood sugar control.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. If you take any blood thinners, immunosuppressants, or diabetes medications, run your specific drugs through the interaction checker below before starting spirulina.

Spirulina powder
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
