Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: tangerine fruit extract in powder form, concentrated at a 4:1 ratio (meaning four pounds of fruit were used to make one pound of extract). There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Tangerine product and its label doesn't state a use — see Tangerine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The data we hold shows insufficient evidence to rate tangerine extract for cancer prevention or treatment — the research just isn't established enough to make a claim either way. If you're interested in this product for a specific health purpose, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current evidence supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tangerine fruit itself is generally well tolerated when eaten as food with no serious adverse effects reported. However, concentrated extracts like this one warrant caution — the safety of supplements in this form hasn't been thoroughly studied the way whole fruit has.

Topically, tangerine essential oil has been linked to contact dermatitis in rare cases. Because concentrated extracts are different from eating the fruit, it's worth discussing this product with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or have sensitive skin.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Tangerine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 644 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Midazolam (Versed) and other drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4 substrates) — including many heart medications, immunosuppressants, and cholesterol drugs — show Minor interactions with tangerine extract. The real-world effect appears minimal based on human studies, but confirm your specific medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Tangerine extract is generally well tolerated, but concentrated forms haven't been as rigorously studied as eating the whole fruit. The main thing to watch is its minor interaction with certain medications metabolized by your liver.

If you take any regular medications — especially sedatives, heart drugs, or immunosuppressants — check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.

Midazolam (Versed)

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, appears to increase the metabolism of midazolam in human liver microsomes by up to 52%. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase the metabolism and reduce the effects of midazolam. However, this effect is unlikely.

Tangerine Fruit 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Tangerine Fruit 4:1 Extract Powder by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tangerine Fruit 4:1 Extract Powder has a known interaction with 643 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tangerine Fruit 4:1 Extract Powder contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is tangerine extract safe if I eat tangerines as food?
Tangerine fruit as food is generally well tolerated. This supplement is a concentrated extract, though, which is a different form — concentrated supplements haven't been studied as thoroughly as eating the whole fruit. If you have questions about whether this particular product is right for you, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Can I use this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for tangerine extract during pregnancy or lactation. Because this is a concentrated form and safety information is limited, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's appropriate for you.
Will tangerine extract help me prevent or treat cancer?
The evidence we hold on tangerine for cancer is insufficient — there just isn't enough reliable research to say whether it works for that purpose. If you're looking at this for cancer prevention or treatment, discuss it with your healthcare provider.
What are the side effects I should watch for?
Very few adverse effects have been reported with medicinal use of tangerine, though a thorough safety review hasn't been done. If you apply the powder topically, there's a rare risk of contact dermatitis. Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you notice any unexpected reactions.
Does this interact with blood pressure or heart medications?
Tangerine extract may affect how your body processes heart medications and other drugs that rely on a specific liver enzyme (CYP3A4). The interaction is minor, but it's worth confirming your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
