Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: tangerine fruit at 450 mg per capsule. The capsules also contain gelatin and water as inactive ingredients — these are the binders and capsule shell that hold the tangerine fruit together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Tangerine product and its label doesn't state a use — see Tangerine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold for tangerine fruit shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for cancer. We don't have data on other health claims, so we can't speak to what this product may or may not do beyond that.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tangerine fruit is generally well tolerated when you eat it as food. The safety notes advise caution with concentrated extracts and essential oils — concentrated supplements and oils haven't been as thoroughly studied as the whole fruit.

Very few adverse effects have been reported from taking tangerine medicinally, though a complete safety evaluation hasn't been done. Topically, tangerine essential oil has been linked to contact dermatitis in one case report, but this product is a capsule meant for oral use, not topical.

We don't have pregnancy and lactation safety data on file for tangerine, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and want to know if this product is right for you.

Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Tangerine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 644 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take midazolam (Versed) or any CYP3A4 substrate drugs — medications your liver processes through a specific pathway. Lab studies suggest tangerine may speed up how your body breaks down these drugs, though human studies showed the effect was minor.

No other drug interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Tangerine Fruit 450 mg is generally well tolerated as food, but concentrated supplements haven't been studied as thoroughly. If you take medications — especially sedatives like midazolam or any drugs your liver breaks down via CYP3A4 — check your exact list with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because tangerine may affect how fast your body clears them.

Most people eating tangerine as food don't see problems, but the evidence for what this supplement does isn't well established.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.

Midazolam (Versed)

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, appears to increase the metabolism of midazolam in human liver microsomes by up to 52%. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase the metabolism and reduce the effects of midazolam. However, this effect is unlikely.

Tangerine Fruit 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Tangerine Fruit 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tangerine Fruit 450 mg has a known interaction with 643 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tangerine Fruit 450 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does tangerine fruit actually help with cancer?
The evidence we have is insufficient to say whether it does or doesn't. We can't recommend it for cancer prevention or treatment based on the data we hold.
Is this safe to take every day?
Tangerine fruit itself is safe as food and is generally well tolerated. However, concentrated supplements like this one haven't been studied as thoroughly as eating the whole fruit, so if you're planning to take it regularly, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.
What's the difference between this supplement and just eating a tangerine?
This is a concentrated 450 mg capsule of tangerine fruit. Safety and long-term effects of concentrated extracts are less well studied than eating tangerines as food. If you're looking for tangerine's benefits, eating the whole fruit is what the safety data actually supports best.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for tangerine fruit during pregnancy or lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they can review your individual situation and advise you.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule contains gelatin and water as inactive ingredients — these are just the binder and capsule shell to hold the tangerine fruit together.
