Tansy contains thujone, a toxic compound, and internal use is generally discouraged. Thujone toxicity can cause rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, fast breathing, severe stomach upset, vomiting, dilated pupils, liver damage, kidney damage, and in rare cases, death — fatalities have occurred from doses as small as 10 drops of tansy oil, sometimes within 1 to 3.5 hours.

Large doses may trigger miscarriage and uterine bleeding. Tansy is likely unsafe in pregnancy and likely unsafe while breastfeeding.

Because tansy is a member of the daisy family (Compositae), topical contact or internal use may trigger allergic skin reactions, eczema, or sun sensitivity in some people. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and lactation.
